Inspired by creativity
With a brief to design a new artist residency space for a prominent community arts organisation, this project is primarily intended as accommodation and communal space for three families as part of a family residency programme. However the space will also serve the dual purpose as a vacation rental to generate income between residencies.
Exploring what it means to be creative led to the concept Off the Wall, and the idea of doing the unexpected, pushing the boundaries of convention and trying new things.
Ultimately this was expressed by deliberately challenging the usual ways of defining and shaping space.
Rooms are frequently trapezoidal with angled circulation paths creating unexpected interiors. The units themselves are unusually shaped and stacked with one being cantilevered over part of the communal space.
Abstract and digital modelling were extensively used to experiment with the spatial layout and unlock a solution that was both unconventional and practical.

Planning for light
Lack of light penetration and few windows on the north side of the building presented a significant design challenge and the design process focused heavily on how to divide the space to make the best use of the available light.

Material Palette
A bold colour palette of warm saturated colours alongside graphic black and white further embodies the creative spirit challenging our notion of what sustainability looks like. Cork, timber and eco-friendly porcelain alongside vintage furniture offer a counterpoint to the vibrancy of the palette.
