Sustainable luxury

With a brief to design a bespoke reception desk from concept through to detailed working drawings, this project focused on the practicalities of constructing a unique yet sustainable desk for two receptionists.

In order to make a bold statement suitable for a reception area, typical forms were rejected in favour of an unusual geometric one. Faced with lightweight stone panels and brushed brass, the monolithic desk explores the use of luxury materials in a sustainable way. The panels are then bookmatched at the seam to create a feature of a limitation of the material.

On the receptionists’ side of the desk, a sustainable, end-grain laminated timber — Plexwood — has been used because it is both durable and warm to the touch. The alignment of the panels creates a subtle pinstripe effect which is both unusual and effectively conceals the panel seams.

To maximise functionality and inclusivity, the accessible counter is cantilevered  from a shallow base, shortening the required reach and allowing the receptionist to serve seated users from the workstation. Similarly, supporting the desk surface on steel braces allows the bespoke  drawer units to be freestanding, not preferencing any particular handedness.
